Wireless microphones rental and usage


OVERVIEW

Target audience: faculty, staff, and current students

McGill faculty, staff, and current students can borrow or rent equipment for McGill-related and non-commercial purposes.

Microphone rental

The public address systems in most large classrooms or auditoriums at McGill are equipped with integrated wireless microphone receivers.

The wireless headsets and transmitters are not kept in the classrooms.

Instructors can rent microphones, headsets, and transmitters for a full semester. If you are teaching on:

Microphone headsets and transmitters can also be rented for non-course purposes for a limited period of time. There is no charge for course-related rental of this equipment. There is a charge for lost or damaged equipment.


 

Setting up the body pack transmitter

The steps for setting up the body pack transmitter are the same for wired and wireless headsets:

Important: To ensure audio quality of your recording, you must wear the headset properly. See Wearing the microphone headset below.

 

Selecting a group

To select the unique group for the room you are using:

  1. On the body pack transmitter, press menu to access the Group screen.
    2. Use the arrow buttons to select a group (1 to 25). You can find group information on the classroom podium and in the Classroom information section of the IT Support site.
    3. Press enter. The screen will advance to channel selection. See Selecting a channel
 

Selecting a channel

To select a channel:

  1. On the body pack transmitter, use the arrow buttons to select a channel.  You can find channel information on the classroom podium and in the Classroom information section of the IT Support site.
  2. Press enter to save the selected channel.

Wearing the microphone headset

Important: Wearing the headset properly is crucial to proper recording of your voice.

Please follow the instructions below to ensure proper headset microphone placement and ensure proper recording:

  1. Install the windscreen on the microphone boom.
  2. Place the headband around the back of the head, with the boom on the left side.
  3. Place the microphone at the corner of the mouth. To decrease pops and explosives, avoid placing the microphone directly in front of the mouth.

Important: Do not store the microphone in damp, enclosed spaces. Allow perspiration to dry completely before storing.
