Focal point for images in the WMS

announcement

This article refers to a legacy WMS process

This article refers to a process used on sites that have not been migrated to the New WMS yet.

If your site is already migrated, consult the Index of documentation for the McGill Web Management System.

OVERVIEW

Target audience: Site Administrators, Site Managers, Site Editors

When an image is uploaded to the WMS with no focal point selection, the image will be centred by default. If the WMS needs to automatically crop an image to fit a certain shape, important parts of the image may be lost or the image will appear off-centre. When the Focal Point feature is used, the most important part of the image (e.g., a person's face) will always display.

Currently, Focal Point is only available for McGill Profiles.

Setting the focal point for McGill Profiles

To set the focal point for an image in a McGill Profile:

  1. Create or edit a McGill Profile and upload an image. For more information, see McGill Profiles in the WMS - Creating & Editing Profiles.

  2. Place the crosshair on the most important portion of the image by dragging the crosshair or by clicking the spot where it should go.

  3. Click Save.

Note: McGill Profile images will always display in a square aspect ratio, independent of the initial image dimensions.
